  • I-Team: Danger On The Road – Last Years accident and the trauma

This story is brought to you by cbs4.com Reporting: Michele Gillen

    The story

It was 4:12 p.m. on a September day last year when the first call for help was placed to 911.

“There are kids and the bus is engulfed in flames,” a distraught witness pleaded into the phone. “Please help!”

At that very moment, a Marion County Sheriffs department helicopter was headed toward the scene of this horrific accident. Within minutes, a camera mounted on the helicopter captured the sight of an 18-wheeler that smashed dead on into the rear of a school bus crowded with children. Rescuers feared the columns of smoke spotted miles away, signaled death.

At the moment of impact, Rhonda Arbuckle, a mother who had three children on the school bus was in her home, more than a half mile away. She looked at the living room clock knowing shortly she would head out to pick up her children from the bus stop. She froze as he heard an unusual sound.

Arbuckle turned cold with fear. She had a premonition.

“I hear a sound that goes, ‘Poof,’” she recalls standing in that very spot of her home. “I literally see in my mind’s eye, a semi come and hit the back of my school bus with my kids on the bus, and I see it burst into flames. And I see the flames shooting up in the air.” And then, she says she heard a message, “I heard two words scream in my head, “NO….GOOOOOO!!”

At that, not even stopping to put on a shirt, Arbuckle jumped in her car and raced to her children’s bus stop turning to look down the road.

“There it is. The semi, the truck the flames are shooting up into the air. I could hear children screaming,” an emotional Arbuckle reveals. On impact from the truck, the school bus was catapulted a football field away.

According to police reports, the truck driver didn’t stop.

Chaos ensued on the ground, as Arbuckle ran to the burning bus. More than a dozen children who made it off the bus are lining the road, some are visibly injured. She embraced her daughter Natalie who had made it out alive, but realized her other two children, and perhaps other children were still on the burning bus.

“It’s an inferno,” Arbuckle explained to CBS4 Chief I-Team Investigator Michele Gillen. “If my kids could have gotten off the bus, they would be off the bus too.”

While many looked on in horror, Arbuckle headed into the flaming bus, rescuing her injured son, Josh, and heading back in to find her youngest daughter JaSena.

“When she turned and looked at me, her entire skull was open and I am looking into the skull of my daughter, and then she collapsed,” Arbuckle said.

Having pulled her daughter to safety, she tried to go back in, to save another little girl, whose legs she had spotted under a seat. In tears, she explained to Gillen, “I am thinking I have got to get this little girl, as I turn back, that’s all I needed, one more trip down that aisle.”

But just then the bus exploded and she couldn’t reach 13-year-old Francis Margay Schee who died from the flames and smoke. Her mother arrived on the scene praying her daughter had made it out alive and was in the rescue truck that passed her on the highway.

On learning that Arbuckle tried but could not reach her child in time, Elissa Schee mournfully told Gillen, “I only wish God would have given her one more minute. It’s miraculous that more kids were not lost in this crash.”

Mark Avera, the Arbuckle family attorney, has been investigating Florida deaths due to big rig accidents for years. He told Gillen, “It wasn’t a question of if someone was going to get hurt or killed, it was just when.”

According to police reports, the truck driver, Reinaldo Andujar Gonzolez, had driven hours beyond what’s legally allowed, and “did not have sufficient rest.” He told police he had been on his cell phone right before he crashed into bus.

The accident prompted the US Department of Transportation to review records of the freight company where the truck driver worked. Investigators say they found dozens of violations, including allowing drivers to drive more hours than the law allows, and allegations of falsified records. The company was ultimately fined $54,000. Fines for violations such as falsifying records or driving without sleep have not changed since the age of President Dwight Eisenhower. Criminal charges against the truck driver include vehicular homicide. He has pleaded not guilty.

It is a case that opens a chilling window into the dangers all of us unknowingly face everyday on Florida highways — accidents involving Big Rigs. Florida ranks 3rd in the nation for deadly truck accidents and it’s a problem that can affect everyone on the road.

And now, according to some past and former drivers, it’s a risk we need to be ever more worried about because of today’s troubled economy.

“Michele, it is just a huge problem,” says Jane Mathis, the Florida volunteer coordinator for the Truck Safety Coalition and a board member of Parents Against Tired Truckers.

“The average of 5,000 people a year are killed in big truck accidents every single year plus an average of over 100,000 are injured every single year that is basically the deaths are basically equivalent to losing 100 people in a major airplane crash every week of every month of every year,” Mathis details. “Do you not think if that was all over the front page of the newspaper, that the people in the United States would be up in arms over it? Of course, they would.”

Mathis says it’s a deadly secret, the pain she knows too well, sharing a wedding picture of her son and his new bride with Gillen

“Yes David and Mary Katherine, right,” Mathis begins to explain that they were just returning from a Florida honeymoon cruise and driving on I- 95, when their car, stopped in traffic, was rear ended by a truck that barreled into it at 60 miles per hour. It was suspected the truck driver had been asleep at the wheel. His son’s cars imploded on impact, he and his bride were burned to death.

Mathis long fully ponders, “Who would have ever thought? I had wedding and funeral flowers at my house at the same time.”

It’s taken a dozen surgeries and procedures to rebuild the face and skull of Rhonda Arbuckle’s youngest daughter, 12-year-old JaSenna. It is considered a miraculous recovery that never would have had a chance, had she not had a premonition and the courage to run into that burning bus.

But in the memory of the child she couldn’t reach, she shares the tears of Margay Shee’s mother, who is left with an inconsolable loss and question.

(You can read more on this story on the link above)

    My thoughts:

It’s incredible to me how we have not tried sooner to stop these truck drivers from illegally going over the hour limits of what they are supposed to drive. This accident happened over a year ago, and still they are trying to make things better. One girl lost her life that day, and when I read this story I had to hold back my tears. I couldn’t imagine being the mother coming up to that scene, having my daughter taken away from me like that. I couldn’t be the mother who helped save those children, who had to see her own daughters skull open, and is still going through surgeries to make it better, a mother who couldn’t help another child but tried. This story is incredible, to know there are people out there who are willing to put their lives at risk to saving others (a civilian). It saddens me that these truck drivers care more about the money then their own lives or lives of others they are putting at risk while driving this way.

I am always afraid of these truck drivers and this just proved that my fear is only right. When I read that Florida is 3rd in the nation for most deadly truck accidents, it just makes me sick. These are things that should have been enforced a long time ago. One can only hope that justice finally pulls through.

  • Burglary suspects wear permanent marker

These two men actually tried robbing an apartment with permanent marker on their face. The police pulled them over and as you can see in the picture above it wasn’t hard to know it was them who were trying to rob the apartment. Matthew McNelly, 23, and Joey Miller, 20 were arrested at gunpoint because the cops where told they may be armed, neither of them had weapons on them but they were arrested for 2nd degree burglary, and later released on bond.

    My thoughts:

Ok first off that guy on the left how old is he? He looks like he’s at least in his 30’s! Second…. REALLY?!? Permanent Marker used as a mask? What were these two thinking? Obviously they weren’t. I also wonder how long it will take to take off that permanent marker off their face.

I know things are tough out there, but if you are going to rob and I’m not saying to do this because there are other ways of getting money, but if you are doing this, at least wear a real mask, not one that’s painted on and one that you can’t even take off. These men deserve to get caught out of stupidity.

If you are going to do something do it right!

  • The Stripper, The Priest, and The Baby

Sounds like a Joke right? Couldn’t be true, right? It’s on the news so it has to be true? RIGHT???

I couldn’t believe what I was reading but this Catholic Priest met this stripper obviously in a strip club over 6 years ago. They had an on and off relationship for years Beatrice Hernandez claims. Father David Dueppen allegedly not only dated this women/stripper, but he abused her and got her pregnant. He tried to deny the baby was his, but Beatrice had him take a paternity test and it is proven 99.9999% to be the babies father.

    My thoughts

I couldn’t believe what I was reading. What is this world coming to, that not even a priest can stick to his own vows made to God. Seriously this title, I thought it was going to be a joke?!! Unfortunately it’s not and these are the kind of things we have to read/hear about in the news. This man should not be able to be a Priest any more and I hope that they take full action into him taking responsibility for what he has done. If he wanted to date strippers or women then he should have not made the vow to become a priest and if he noticed it was wrong for him, then he should have told the church and resigned from his position has a priest. (I’m not sure how this works) but I’m sure there are better ways then to sneak behind the church and do these kinds of things.

Right now Beatrice is getting a restraining order towards the Priest and she is also going to court herself for allegedly stalking another women she claims is the Priest’s new girlfriend….Oh what is this world coming to?!?

  • Is Money Evil?!?

    Is Money Evil?!?

    The story

I was listening to the radio this morning about two sisters, 83 and 87 year old, who for a long time always gambled together. In 1997 they had a letter notarized stating that whatever the other won, they would split the sharing’s. In 2005 one of the 83 year old sister won $500k. She won this with her brother and they decided not to share it with their older sister. The 87 year old sister had to find out about their winnings in the newspaper. She is now suing her sister for her part of the money. She says, it’s not about the money, but about morals and the fact that they had a pact to share each others winnings. The sisters had a falling out and the 83 year old women believes she shouldn’t have to share her winnings with her 87 year old sister. The 87 year old sister says she misses her sister but all she wants is what is rightfully hers.

    My Thoughts

Is money evil?!? Even at the age of 87 and 83, after so many years of knowing what family means, they still let money get in the way. People are still arguing over money. Money has we know it for centuries has destroyed families, friendships and more. Don’t get me wrong, I would love to have a lot of money one day, who wouldn’t, but why does it have to change who you are?!? If you were raised with certain morals, certain beliefs, you need to be strong enough to keep those beliefs and morals, to stay true to yourself. I think what happens, is that people get greedy, and greed unfortunately takes over the love you have for people. This will only leave you lonely and unhappy at the end of the day. I rather be happy and comfortable then rich and miserable.

    Sometimes our hearts get tangled
And our souls a little off-kilter
Friends and family can set us right
And help guide us back to the light.

  • Man held in killing at Miramar hospital – UPDATE

Remember I talked about this story last week (Thursday) about a man who was shot in his car at the Miramar Hospital. Well they have a guy under arrest. You can link to the previous article to catch up Here.

    The story….

Police have arrested a man by the name of Ricardo Manuel Gutierrez on Sunday for “allegedly” murdering a man at the Miramar hospital. The man’s name was Antonio Noisette, he was a cafeteria worker and was found dead in his car last week, police said.

The surveillance video that police were investigating and witness interviews led police to Ricardo Gutierrez, 43, police said in a news release Sunday night. It was Thursday, July 16, 2009, when police found the body of Antonio Noisette, 55, in a parking lot at Memorial Hospital Miramar. He had been shot several times and was found in the early morning around 5am.

Police are saying that an emergency room physician pronounced him dead at the scene. By the time the rescue workers reached Antonio Noisette’s Toyota on the east side of the parking lot, he was already dead. They found one window shattered. Right now Police are not discussing any possible motives for the case.

    My Thoughts

Antonio Noisette has four children, what are these children going to do now without their father? Why did this shooting take place? Questions even the police are still trying to figure out. It’s always sad to hear stories like this, especially of someone with children they now leave behind. I can not imagine, what these children must be going through right now. Life works in ways we’ll never understand, ways that cause pain and grief. With time, you will heal, but the pain will always remain from a loss of someone you loved dearly, someone who was close to your heart. My prayers go out to the family of Antonio Noisette, and I hope that they put this man away for a life time.

  • Pool Boots Kids Who Might “Change the Complexion”

I was introduced to this story by a fellow Yelper, if you don’t know what a Yelper is you can always go to Yelp.com ….So anyway, He posted this story in one of the threads floating around on Yelp. I couldn’t believe what I was reading….

    The Story

They said more then 60 campers from Northeast Philadelphia were told to leave from a Private Swim Club and were left to wonder if there race was the issue.

“I heard this lady, she was like, ‘Uh, what are all these black kids doing here?’ She’s like, ‘I’m scared they might do something to my child,’” said camper Dymire Baylor.

The Creative Steps Day Camp paid more than $1900 to The Valley Swim Club. They are a private club that advertises open membership, however, with the campers’ first visit to the pool this club suggested they leave.

“When the minority children got in the pool all of the Caucasian children immediately exited the pool,” Horace Gibson, parent of a day camp child, wrote in an email. “The pool attendants came and told the black children that they did not allow minorities in the club and needed the children to leave immediately.”

The club offered to refund them the money but the Camp Director Aetha Wright said that the parents didn’t want a refund, they just wanted a place where there children can swim. They are still unsure, and unsettled as to why they weren’t welcomed to the Club.

“They just kicked us out. And we were about to go. Had our swim things and everything,” said camper Simer Burwell.

“There was concern that a lot of kids would change the complexion … and the atmosphere of the club,” John Duesler, President of The Valley Swim Club said in a statement.

    My thoughts

I am truly astonished by this kind of act. Honestly I’m disgusted. I didn’t think that people can still be so cruel in regards to a persons color, especially to innocent children. Are people that ignorant still? Are people that stupid? I say stupid, because if you are racist, that’s exactly what you are. STUPID! I can use stronger words, but I won’t. When the President of the club John Duelser stated that there was concerns that a lot of the kids would change the complexion, and atmosphere of the club, I could not believe he was actually stating that to the press. Is he an idiot? I’m honestly speechless. I don’t even know what to say about these people. I just hope that they realize the world has changed, and it doesn’t matter what the color of your skin is, we are all the same, we are all human.

I say a prayer to those people because honestly to be so ignorant you need someone to save you.

  • Miramar Hospital Employee Shot To Death

    Memorial Hospital
    Memorial Hospital

A Miramar hospital employee was shot dead at work Thursday morning.

    Miramar Hospital

There are different articles on this story I’m about to discuss, all relatively similar but a few different points, so I am going to link you to each article I found at the bottom of my discussion.

    The story:

It was only about 4:30 am when an employee from Miramar Hospital was shot while sitting in his car in the parking lot, on 1901 SW 172nd Ave.

They are saying an off-duty police officer who was in the hospital ran outside and fired at the shooter, Miramar police spokesman Tania Rues said. Other articles are saying it was a police officer who was inside the hospital who was on security detail. Either way the officer ran outside only to find the victim already dead.

Police are looking for a red Nissan Xterra SUV, and they are looking at surveillance cameras in hopes to find out more about the killer. Around 5:00 to 5:30 a.m., the victim’s body remained in the driver’s seat of his car and was pronounced dead. Police still have not released the persons name or why he may have been shot. This case is still under investigation.

The hospital is still open to the public.

    My Thoughts:

It’s scary to read and hear about cases like this. Cases that lye so close to home. Why was this man shot? The person who did it, what were they thinking? Questions no one knows at the moment. Hopefully the cameras will show more detail on how the shooter looks, and hopefully they will catch him quickly before he does something else.

If you want to read the links I got the information from go to Miami Herald , CBS 4 News , or SunSentinal.com

My prayers go out to the victim shot in his car and to his family who will now have to mourn his death.

  • Ft. Lauderdale Police Look For Alleged Abductors

First lets start with the title “Alleged Abductors”. Doesn’t alleged mean it may or may not have happened. But clearly the girl was abducted from her home? No?

So back to the story on hand….

Tuesday morning around 4:05 am a teen girl was “allegedly” abducted from her home by gun point and put inside a van. (The type of van is still unknown). There were two men and when one of them tried to rape her, she fought back, something a lot of women hesitate to do, because they are scared the abductor might hurt them more. She was able to kick him in the groan and get out of the van to run for help. This teenage girl is very brave and I am very happy that she got away.

    Who are these men?

The police released a sketch, (the one posted above) of a man who’s believed to be in his 30’s with black hair and possibly Hispanic. “Police said he appears to be unshaven and was wearing a white or gray pair of sneakers. The second suspect was described as a white man, possibly Hispanic.” Now I know what your thinking this is about almost every 30 year old man in Miami, minus what he might have been wearing. I’m sure he’s changed by now. Either way, I just hope they find these men, and quick. Before they try to “allegedly” abduct another girl.

    What is on your mind?

I just think that this poor young girl will now be traumatized, but grateful to still be alive and untouched. I hope that they catch these idiots. I say idiots because I cannot comprehend a man or men (in this case) to do such a thing. Do they even deserve the name “MEN”? Because I don’t think a real man would have to go so low as to “allegedly” abduct a teenage girl from there home and then try to rape them. Who knows what else they had in mind for this young girl. She was just very lucky to get away. I think more women should fight back if something like this was to happen to them. Fighting back might save your life.

They say Anyone with information about the crime should contact the Fort Lauderdale police or Broward County CrimeStoppers at 954-431-TIPS.

  • MJ final Act in Los Angeles

    RIP Michael Jackson
    RIP Michael Jackson

It is always sad to hear about a famous person passing away. It’s even sadder when the person passing means so much to so many people.

    Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson was an Icon to many, and even though there were many rumors passing that he was a “pervert” or that he “molested children”. I just don’t think that it’s true. Sure he was strange, and maybe we didn’t understand him all that much, but that doesn’t mean the man molested children. Honestly if you were a parent of a boy/girl that was “supposedly” molested by any man, would you take money (no matter how much) or fight to put them away in jail??? I’m not a mother, but if I was, I wouldn’t take any amount of money, even if it’s millions of dollars, I would fight and I would tell that person to shove the money where the sun don’t shine. I would fight and make sure that they would go to jail. I wouldn’t take the money. So what does that say to you? Either this women is a horrible mother or she just wanted money?!?

    Memorial

They stated on the news they believe they had the private memorial last night with his family. Today the public memorial will be held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. They say 1.6 million people signed up for tickets but only about 8,750 people received tickets. This funeral will be one of the biggest in history, with elephants crossing the street to the arena. If you want to read more about this Click HERE

    Sad moments….

It’s sad, and it’s ashame that MJ had to pass before he had time to come back. He was planning the tour in London and he sounded better then ever, most say. You can actually find video’s on Youtube.com. So today’s the day the world says good bye to an incredible performer, and as they all shed tears for a man no one really knew we close our eyes and pray he’s in peace.

  • Tuition hikes at Florida’s colleges to fill a variety of needs

    Tuition Fees (Taking our money)
    Tuition Fees (Taking our money)

I was reading this article here that talks about 11 State Universities deciding to take full advantage on raising the residents tuition fee up to 15%.

    This just pisses me off!!!

I get so upset when I see things like this. Raising tuition. I’m sorry is the tuition and classes and books already so cheap that we need to raise the prices on everything? Last time I checked I payed a pretty high price on my classes and lets not even get started on books.

It was stated in the article ”This is a year when students are going to see the largest increase in undergraduate tuition they have seen in years,” Jessel said. “We believe that extra need-based aid is very important.” SERIOUSLY?!? I can’t imagine having to pay more already out of pocket. I don’t apply for financial aid and getting a loan with the school system is a big time mission.

When I decided to go back to school after 4 years of not attending, I was turned down by the loan office due to a failing grade I had received 4 years prior in a different school. Does this make sense to you? I couldn’t get a loan because of a failing grade? 4 years ago!? What does this have to do with loaning me money??? I was grateful that at the time I was able to pay for school out of pocket, had I been unable to do so, the school system pretty much was telling me I couldn’t go back to school. Is this fair?

As of the past year I have continued to pay for school out of pocket, including books and supplies. This runs at Miami Dade College about $1300 dollars a semester taking up to 3 classes. At the moment I can afford to do this, because I live at home. If I had to get my own place which I plan on doing soon hopefully, I will more then likely have to get a loan. Hopefully this time I’ll be able to get one. If not, I am not sure what I’ll have to do.

    Things are hard

Things are hard right now and they want to RAISE our tuition. Does this make sense? I think this will turn off people from going to school. What do you think?

    XO,
    Kristin Nicole
